In the wake of a global pandemic, COVID-19, which has no proper treatment yet, people search for home remedies to cure the virus. The Coronavirus has symptoms similar to influenza, and doctors and other medical practitioners have been treating it as such. Warm herbal teas, soups, and cough syrups have been everyone’s partners this year. One of the most readily available items at home that helps cure multiple ailments and acts as a soothing substance for a sore throat or cough is honey.
Honey and its benefits
New coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by extreme acute respiratory syndrome was recently identified by the Chinese Wuhan city to circulate in more than 40 countries worldwide in December 2019. All nations found this outbreak during a World Health Organization (WHO) pandemic on 12 March 2020. No therapy for infected patients with COVID-19 has at present been shown to be effective. Natural honey has been proven in many clinical studies to be a potent antimicrobial. It has been seen as a successful alternative for antiviral pharmaceutical products to combat some viral infections. In a randomized, controlled experiment, the researchers aim to test the effectiveness of naturally occurring honey in managing COVID-19 patients.
- Reducing the duration of diarrhea
Research-based reviews of honey also found that the intensity and length of diarrhea have been reduced. Studies have reported that honey, by its antibacterial effects, shortens diarrhea time in patients with bacterial gastroenteritis. Honey also encourages an increased intake of potassium and water, especially when diarrhea is present. A study in Lagos, Nigeria, shows that honey has also demonstrated the capacity to inhibit the action of disease-causing pathogens.
One of the symptoms of Covid-19 is diarrhea. Using honey as a home remedy can lessen the severity and can put the patient at ease.
- Strengthens immune system
Honey has innumerable herbal properties that tend to cure a sore throat naturally. Its antioxidants and antibacterial effects also tend to avoid viruses, bacteria, and fungal infections like the prevailing Coronavirus. According to physicians and scientists, honey has the most antioxidants. If eaten every day, it will help improve immunity in the long term, so honey is considered among the best foods to boost immunity. Each morning before breakfast or even exercise, it is always advisable to eat honey to get an extra lift for the entire day. It also acts as a washing toner that enhances children’s immunity. A strong immune system will also help fight the virus since a weak person has the tendency to fall even sicker.
- Fighting infections
Research has shown that bacteria found in honey is useful for fighting infections. The bacteria is found in honeybee stomachs. During a pandemic, when people already fear getting infected, honey comes to the rescue and lessens the chances of getting infected by unwanted bacterias and viruses.
- Relieving cold and cough symptoms
Honey is considered to be one of the strongest dry cough and wet cough treatments in the household. A study has also shown that the use of a tablespoon of honey may minimize throat discomfort. Honey is the recommended natural cure, particularly for children, since it helps to alleviate cough at night and makes good sleep. When the viruses are contaminated, they obstruct the sinuses and capture the oxygen and mucus that trigger trouble. Honey is a natural antibacterial and antiseptic, on the other side, helping to remove bacteria and to relieve inflammation. Honey often soothes and eliminates contaminants, improving the immune system, and inducing fewer sinus attacks. Since Covid-19 has a cough and flu-related symptoms and such remedies might be helpful for the virus too.
Role of honey in fighting the virus
A treatment using black cumin and honey has shown improvements in patients with Covid-19 symptoms. Results showed that the patients treated with honey showed a negative PCR (test is done to check for Covid-19) four days earlier than the patients without the treatment. A trial for the treatment was conducted from May 2020 to July 2020, when Covid was at its peak. A total of 313 subjects were recruited, of which 210 were cases of nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, and fever, and the rest 103 were severe cases of pneumonia and respiratory distress. The patients were randomly selected for the treatment, where they were given honey and black cumin according to the severity of their illness. There was a visible difference in the patients of the treatment and the patients who were given capsules and other medicines. The patients being provided the treatment recovered earlier, while the others required oxygen therapy and were hospitalized.
As a treatment for the Coronavirus, Honey has shown significant results, increasing mortality rate and viral clearance in patients. It is something that is easily available at home and is an over the counter therapy that is affordable and accessible to almost everyone.
